Habovka has been parish since 1787 when monarch Jozef II
canceled 600 castles from property of which he had established fund for developing of new parishes.
That year Juraj Wagner had become very first priest in
habovka-zuberec-bieleypotok's parish.
"In the year of 1715, for the very fist time was build wooden church in this parish by Jan Samko, at that time priest in parish with the permission from Ladislav Peber, the vicar. People from Habovka, Zuberec, and Biely Potok also offered their help. This church was blessed in the name of The Gloriest Mary the Virgin in the year of 1716. In now a days there is a chapel of Mary Magdalena instead of church, which was build in 1859 and where people from Habovka invested 400 that time valid currency. This money was offered by Ladislav Zabojsky, the bishop. |
| That church was blessed in 1876 by Mikulas Sadecky, priest in kalegiat church in Spis and orava's archidiakon. That branch was established as a parish with its priest by royal note; therefore, His Royal Majesty was asked for the permission to build new and wider church. This church was build from solid material, financed from the Religion fund in the 8th year before 1813. That year, 1813, huge catastrophe destroyed new church with its belongings and with the parish's house and on churches' location in Habovka, the river Studena Voda established its float. After this church was destroyed and previous one was moved to Huty, people from Habovka and Zuberec build temporary church from half-roten wood. This building was unattractive and dangerous not-like-church looking and it could fall any time. The building was used as a church for 17 years. During those years, local priest Jozef Virostek was trying any possible way to get a permission to build new God's House. Finally, in the year of 1821 works on current 4th church had begun. | ![]() |

This project had met many obstacles. Therefore, in the year of 1821, when on May 12,1819 His Holy Highness finally gave a permission, works began on May 16, 1821 from the fund of 1 from the whole investment of 3,700 of valid currency. This amount was given from Religion Fund in Klastor pod Znievom. At the end of November, the roof of the church was done. Everything was financed from another part from the fund. The whole amount of the amount was reached in 1828 and after asking repeatedly on high places, works continued in the year of 1829. From May until September 1, successfully worked masters Jan Hlavay and Ondrej Polansky. All works were observed and bookkeeping done by priest Jozef Virostek. September 1, 1829 after people's prayers, he placed gold cross on the tower-ball, which stayed there until 1886. |
| In 1881 was discovered that church and tower need repair. Therefore, local priest asked the
bishop for help; however, the whole deal was closed not until 1883. Next year repairing works begun
under leadership of Jakub Kux who later on rented it. Jan Glush and Jan Rozehnal did repairs. During
repair, the ball was taken off and new layer of gold was placed on. On June 24, 1886, the ball was
placed on the tower during ceremony. This was written down very briefly because of the lack of time and the note was made for the memory to the ball on Jun 24, 1886. (Written by Frantisek Silvester, priest of Habovka)" Taken from: History of Habovka's parish. |
